With a heavy heart I sadly report that on October 12, 2009 at approximately 6:57 pm, Sgt. Mickey Hutchens of the Winston-Salem Police Department passed away.
Sgt. Hutchens was shot in the face by a gunman that was on his way to kill his exwife.
Sgt. Hutchens was a wonderful man, a good sergeant and a great friend. He was very soft spoken, which is something I really liked about him. He was so easy going and seemed to always be calm and collected. He was married and had two adult daughters. Unfortunately I don't know their names. I only knew Mickey. Mickey is a true hero...he took that deadly bullet to save the life of a woman he did not know... just so she could live another day.
The hearts of my brothers/sisters in blue are breaking. But, they take comfort and pride in knowing that Mickey honored his oath to protect and serve.
We all understand the risk...the wives, husbands, children...but we pray every night that our loved ones will come home to us in the morning. It is really hard on all of us when a sudden, tragic death takes place. However, when you are part of a police family it is 1,000 times worse. I know this isn't the best post I have written and I apologize for that, but at this time it is very hard to concentrate...
Thank your local Police Officers today.

I wanted to thank you for your blog. I am the daughter of another officer at WSPD and while I am now away from home hearing the news devastated me. Its hard to describe the pain to others not in the police family, but it is a unit and bond that I am forever thankful for. May sgt. hutchens rest in peace, may officer clark heal quickly and may all the families find some peace in their heart.
thank you.
Anonymous, thank you so much for your comment. You are so right... other people could never understand the unbreakable bond that we have with all of these officers. We are a family for life. Thank you so much.
